Default tailor on lures

I have been doing a bit of beach fishing around the rockingham area lately and am interested in maybe giving a lure a crack this weekend to try and catch some tailor..

I'm relatively new to it and would just like to know if it works, what works best and how should my line be rigged??

Cheers

G'day Jeffo, you certainly can catch Tailor on lures, anything that resembles a small baitfish would do the trick, I once saw some guy's using small barrel sinker painted white doing the trick, on many species, and they are cheaper than some lures.

I'm sure there will be others here with more info, Good Luck.

John

Hey Jeff firstly welcome aboard the site. We are a pretty friendly bunch here and always willing ot offer advice. Tailor on lures can be great fun although rather exhausting as you are constantly casting and retrieving. I would go for a small to medium metal sure as john said. For Tailor fishing off the beach a 10-12 foot surf rod matched with a good high speed spinning reel (although I have seen anglers use an Alvey Reel) loaded up with about 10-12kg mono down to a swivel and then either heavier mono trace or wire trace. When I used to fish Fraser Island I would use wire trace with a snap swivel on the end which made it eaiser and quicker to change lures if needed. I can take a couple of pics of some of my metal lures and post them if you want. Hope this helps.

No problems mate just getting ready to go to work so I will try and remember to post some pics tomorrow. The Ugly Stick isnt too bad but I much prefer to use a good surf rod so that you can get some extra distance past the waves. They are not to expensive these day and you can normally pick up a fairly decent one for just over $100. Good luck.

mate any chrome pilchard look alike or a chrom slice work really well with them...they also work for salmon when they are on the bite.

Jeffo, Here are a couple of pics of my metal lures that have been used on Tailor and Mackeral and worked quite well. I used to have a small blue pilchard but cant find it I think it might have been taken by a Mackeral while I was in Cooktown fishing from the wharf. If you also have a look at the link you well see an earlier thread with a lure in it that my dad used in his fishing days which was deadly on tailor. Personally I have never used it because it is a rare lure.
